Italian Prince and his glamorous actress wife victims of jewelry heist in Paris

One of the most glamorous couples in Parisian high society have become the victims of an elaborate theft after between €200,000 and €500,000 worth of jewellery was stolen from their home.

Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy, Prince of Venice and his actress wife Clotilde Courau were on holiday in Italy when the burglary occurred. It came just two weeks after Courau had her handbag stolen on the metro, with her house keys inside. It is being speculated in the French media that the couple did not get around to changing their locks and that the thieves were able to let themselves inside, suggesting it was the work of professionals.

As a police source told The Times: ‘This type of burglary is rarely the work of amateurs. To get rid of the jewels you need a good network of accomplices because they are recognisable.’

There has been a sharp rise in the number of burglaries in the French capital over the last year, rising by 16 per cent to 17,330, including several high-profile cases, including that of Kim Kardashian and Paris Saint-Germain footballer Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.

Kardashian was robbed at gunpoint during Paris Fashion Week in 2017, after posting pictures of her jewellery worth €9 million on social media, and while her bodyguard was out with her sisters at a club. Meanwhile sportsman Choupo-Moting had €600,000 of jewellery and clothing taken while he was out playing in a football match against Liverpool in November.

Glamorous French aristocrats Prince Jean-Christophe Napoléon and Countess Olympia von Arco-Zinneberg were able to recover a family heirloom worth £1 million earlier this year, after the 40-carat diamond ring was taken from their car. The treasured ring was made using a diamond taken from the diadem of France’s last empress, Eugenie, and was as such priceless.

There was also an incident last year when three men wielding axes smashed their way into the jewellery cases of the Paris Ritz Hotel, taking £4 million worth of watches and jewels.
