Olympic figure skating legend Surya Bonaly is recovering from a significant personal loss after her West Las Vegas home was burglarized, resulting in the theft of her cherished Olympic medals and other belongings. The incident, detailed in a Metropolitan Police Department report, occurred while Bonaly was away from home on October 17.
Bonaly, known worldwide for her athleticism, artistry, and her historic one-blade backflip at the 1998 Winter Olympics, contacted police on October 24 after discovering signs of forced entry. According to the report, her front door glass had been shattered, and multiple rooms inside the home were completely ransacked.
Surveillance footage revealed two suspects — a man and a woman, both described as being in their 30s — breaking the front door glass before entering the residence. Additional footage from three days later showed the same individuals removing large bags from the property and leaving on foot. The woman was notably wearing what appeared to be an Amazon delivery jacket.
The burglars stole approximately $7,000 worth of items and caused additional damage to the property. Among the taken items were Bonaly’s laptop and, most distressingly, her Olympic medals. The suspects also attempted to steal a white GMC vehicle parked on the premises but were unsuccessful due to a battery issue.
One exterior security camera was knocked down during the break-in, and it remains unclear whether the suspects had prior knowledge of Bonaly or targeted the home at random. Bonaly told police she had no idea who the individuals could be.
In the days following the burglary, Bonaly shared the incident publicly on Instagram. She issued a plea to the Las Vegas community — especially local pawn shops — asking for vigilance and urging anyone who encounters foreign gold or silver medals for sale to contact law enforcement immediately.
As the investigation continues, police are asking residents in the area to remain alert and report any information that may assist in locating the suspects or recovering Bonaly’s stolen property.
