UNLV Tragedy: 3 dead with more injured, suspect dead, police say

In a shocking turn of events, the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) found itself in the midst of a tragedy on December 6, 2023. A shooting incident unfolded, resulting in three lives lost and one individual in critical condition. The suspected perpetrator was also confirmed deceased by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD).

The Incident Unfolds

The incident was first reported by UNLV at 11:53 a.m., urging students and faculty to take immediate action by evacuating to a safe area and practicing the "RUN-HIDE-FIGHT" protocol. Subsequent updates confirmed an active shooter situation, with LVMPD responding to reports of multiple victims on the UNLV campus.

Swift Response and Evacuation

Law enforcement and campus authorities worked in tandem to manage the crisis. By 12:32 p.m., one suspect was located and confirmed deceased, providing a sense of relief, although the campus remained on high alert. UNLV continued to advise students to shelter in place, with police evacuating buildings one at a time. At 1:34 p.m., LVMPD Sheriff Kevin McMahill assured the public that there was no further threat, allowing authorities to focus on attending to the victims.

Closure and Support

In a precautionary measure, UNLV and other institutions in the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) closed their campuses for the remainder of the day. The LVMPD established a hotline (702-455-2433) for those impacted by the incident, providing reunification and victim services. A reunification center was also set up at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Ongoing Investigation

As the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragic event, LVMPD is diligently investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Authorities confirmed three deceased victims and one individual in critical condition at a local hospital.
