An elderly West Hollywood resident is recounting a terrifying encounter after coming face-to-face with a burglar who broke into his home earlier this month.

The incident occurred on February 1 at a condominium near Hilldale Avenue and Vista Grande Street. Surveillance footage shows two male suspects scouting the property before targeting a second-floor balcony. One suspect carried a collapsible ladder while the other stood watch below.

According to authorities, the suspect placed the ladder against the balcony and climbed up, quickly cutting the lock on the balcony door to gain entry. What the intruder did not expect was that the homeowner — an 80-something man identified only as “Victor” for safety reasons — was inside.

Victor said he suddenly emerged from his bedroom and found himself standing face-to-face with the suspect inside his hallway.

“All of a sudden, you see a man who you don’t know in your hallway,” Victor told KTLA. “He made a sign to ‘shush’ to me, and so I started screaming at him, ‘Get out!’”

Rather than backing down, Victor confronted the intruder and refused to retreat. Surveillance video shows the suspect immediately fleeing the residence, scrambling back down the ladder and escaping empty-handed.

Neighbors expressed concern following the attempted burglary, noting a pattern of similar crimes in the area. One neighbor, Jeff, said his own surveillance cameras captured the suspects fleeing in a light-colored crossover or small SUV, possibly a Honda or Toyota — a vehicle large enough to transport the ladder used in the break-in.

“They’re clearly looking for something they can carry,” Jeff said. “It’s gotta be jewelry and money.”

Jeff added that this was the third burglary attempt on the street involving suspects accessing balconies with ladders, heightening anxiety among residents.

Victor believes he may have seen at least one of the suspects prior to the incident, possibly while the individual was casing the neighborhood. He recalled noticing a man wearing a distinctive motorcycle-style backpack while closely observing the area.

“He was walking and attentively looking around, looking in different alleys and different angles,” Victor said.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident. Anyone who recognizes the suspects or has information is urged to contact the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station at 310-855-8850.

Despite the frightening encounter, Victor’s quick reaction prevented the suspects from stealing anything — and highlighted how rapidly a quiet evening at home can turn into a dangerous situation.
