On June 25th, the usually serene Ocean Front Walk became the site of a horrifying incident involving Jawann Garnett, a 31-year-old homeless man and registered sex offender. Garnett allegedly attacked three women in a violent spree that culminated in a terrifying scene on the beach. One victim recounted how Garnett dragged her underwater by her hair, while another bystander, Jenna Wilker, described her own harrowing experience of being strangled and nearly bitten by Garnett before he turned his attention to a third victim, attempting to drown her in the ocean.
A Series of Unsettling Events
The June 25th attack is just one in a series of violent incidents that have rattled the Santa Monica community. On May 23rd, a 73-year-old woman was assaulted by a homeless man during her morning walk. The attacker, identified as Jalan James, reportedly pushed her to the ground, resulting in a back injury and cuts. Ryan Springer, a local business worker who witnessed the incident, expressed his shock and immediate reaction to help the elderly victim.
Barely a week earlier, on May 19th, two tourists were stabbed in unprovoked attacks near the Santa Monica Promenade. The suspect, Larry Cedeno, was out on probation for larceny at the time of the attack. Just days before, another violent incident occurred on May 13th, when Malcolm Jimmy Ward Jr., a parolee, allegedly attempted to rape a female jogger on the beach path.
Community Response and Concerns
The surge in violence has not gone unnoticed by local authorities and community leaders. Los Angeles City Councilmember Traci Park has been vocal about the escalating safety concerns, highlighting the dangers posed by unstable individuals roaming the streets. Her remarks came in the wake of brutal assaults near the Venice Canals, including one incident that left Sarah Alden, a victim of an attack, in a coma for nearly a month before she passed away.
"People in the city of Los Angeles are sick and tired of feeling unsafe," Park stated emphatically. "No woman, no visitor, no family should be unsafe walking in any neighborhood in the city of Los Angeles."
