In a chilling incident captured on home surveillance video, three armed suspects attempted to break into a Whittier home on the evening of May 24, 2024. The harrowing footage reveals the moments when the masked intruders tried to deceive the homeowners before attempting a forced entry.
The incident occurred at a residence on the 8100 block of Bradwell Avenue. According to a post made by the victims on the Ring app, the suspects, all dressed in masks and hoodies, pretended to be representatives from SoCalGas, requesting to check the home's meter. The family, suspicious of the trio, denied them entry.
The surveillance video shows the three men walking away from the front door, while the family cautiously stepped outside to ensure they were leaving. However, as the family began to re-enter their home, the suspects suddenly turned and sprinted back towards them, drawing what appeared to be firearms from their waistbands.
Fortunately, the family managed to retreat inside and secure the door before the intruders could gain entry. The suspects then fled the scene, leaving the family shaken but unharmed.
This incident has left the local community on edge, prompting concerns about safety and security. "It's scary, kind of a wake-up call to look out for each other," said one neighbor who chose to remain anonymous. "Nothing like that has ever happened since we moved here."
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is currently investigating the attempted home invasion. In response, SoCalGas issued a statement urging residents to remain vigilant and to always verify the identity of anyone claiming to be from the company. SoCalGas employees are required to carry photo identification and generally visit homes only after a service request has been made.
"Always ask for identification before letting someone inside your home," the statement emphasized, highlighting the importance of being cautious to prevent such frightening incidents.
As investigations continue, residents are reminded to prioritize their safety and report any suspicious activities to local authorities. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers and the need for community vigilance. Stay safe and stay informed, Whittier. Source and video footage can be found at: CBS News
