In the early hours of May 17, 2025, a cannabis store co-owned by actor Woody Harrelson and comedian Bill Maher was the target of a bold and highly coordinated burglary in West Hollywood, California. The incident, which occurred around 4:30 a.m., has raised serious concerns about security vulnerabilities in even the most prominent retail establishments.
The store, known as The Woods WeHo, sits on the bustling 8200 block of Santa Monica Boulevard. Touted as an "Amsterdam-style" cannabis café, it has garnered significant attention since its grand opening in 2022, blending upscale cannabis retail with a relaxed, lounge-style atmosphere.
But on Saturday morning, that ambiance was shattered—literally. Surveillance footage, later shared on social media by entrepreneur Elliot Lewis, shows several hooded individuals smashing through the store’s glass storefront. The video captures the suspects swiftly filling trash bags with merchandise before an armed security guard confronted them, prompting their hasty retreat.
While no injuries were reported, the store was left visibly damaged, and the emotional toll on its owners and team was evident. “Our hearts go out to Samba and Woody and their entire crew,” Lewis wrote. “Make it make sense. Please bring back some common sense.”
At the time of writing, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has not released an official statement regarding the break-in or any potential suspects.
This incident underscores a broader issue plaguing commercial properties, especially in high-traffic areas like West Hollywood. As cannabis businesses continue to grow in popularity and visibility, they are becoming increasingly attractive targets for theft—regardless of celebrity ties or the presence of on-site security.
The Woods burglary serves as a stark reminder: when it comes to protecting assets, reputation, and peace of mind, even the most recognizable names aren’t immune to crime.
Stay safe, stay aware.
