A frightening early-morning home invasion in Hermosa Beach ended with a dramatic police response and the arrest of a burglary suspect after officers learned two young children were inside the residence.
According to the Hermosa Beach Police Department, the incident unfolded around 2:45 a.m. on June 8 at a home on Manhattan Avenue. Officers were dispatched after receiving reports of a possible burglary in progress.
A woman inside the residence contacted authorities and informed dispatchers that her two children, ages 3 and 5, were asleep on the second floor of the home. Believing an intruder had entered through a window, she exited the residence and met responding officers outside.
Given the presence of children inside the home and the uncertainty surrounding the suspect’s location, Hermosa Beach police quickly requested assistance from neighboring law enforcement agencies, including the Manhattan Beach, El Segundo, and Redondo Beach police departments, along with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Authorities established a perimeter around the property in case the suspect attempted to flee.
As officers coordinated their response, the situation escalated.
Police said the suspect briefly opened the front door and appeared ready to run but immediately retreated after seeing officers outside. The individual then allegedly deadbolted the door and ran upstairs toward the room where the children were sleeping.
Faced with the possibility of an immediate threat to the children, officers forced entry into the home. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident.
Authorities reported that both children were found unharmed and still asleep in their room.
Investigators later discovered that the residence had been ransacked during the break-in. A search of the suspect reportedly uncovered property belonging to the homeowner, as well as additional items believed to have been stolen during other thefts committed earlier that evening.
The suspect’s identity has not yet been released, and the investigation remains ongoing.
In a statement following the arrest, Hermosa Beach Police Chief Landon Phillips praised the responding officers and supporting agencies for their swift action.
“The wellbeing of those two children was our first priority from the moment we got the call,” Phillips said. “Our officers responded without hesitation, and their quick thinking and coordination with our neighboring departments led to the quick capture of this dangerous suspect.”
The incident serves as a reminder of how rapidly burglary investigations can escalate when residents are inside a home and highlights the critical role of coordinated emergency response in protecting vulnerable occupants.
