A disturbing burglary in West Hollywood has left residents shaken after an elderly man’s companion dog was killed during the crime.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD), deputies responded to reports of a break-in around 11:36 p.m. on Thursday, September 4, at an apartment building on Harper Avenue near Santa Monica and Sweetzer.
Surveillance footage captured the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Anmol Bhatia, entering the unit without permission. Once inside, investigators allege he brutally attacked the victim’s dog. LASD Detective David Cusiter reported that the animal was stomped and kicked, resulting in its death.
After the assault, the suspect allegedly stole a backpack containing the victim’s wallet, identification, credit cards, and cash. The apartment’s large television was also damaged before the intruder fled the scene.
Authorities say Bhatia was known to the victim and had been a friend prior to a falling out. Investigators have released his image as a person of interest in the case, which is being treated as both burglary and animal cruelty.
The incident has sparked outrage across the West Hollywood community, with many residents expressing heartbreak over the violence against a defenseless pet. Detectives are urging anyone with information to contact the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station at 310-855-8850. Anonymous tips can also be submitted online.
The investigation remains ongoing.
