Residents of a Brentwood neighborhood experienced a frightening ordeal Monday night after suspects attempted to break into a home while people were still inside.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers responded around 8:45 p.m. to reports of burglary suspects at a residence located in the 12700 block of Montana Avenue. What unfolded highlights a growing concern for homeowners as criminals continue targeting occupied homes in residential communities.

Investigators say three suspects approached the property and used a crowbar to smash a large front window in an apparent attempt to gain entry. The force of the impact shattered a prominent front-facing window, which was later seen boarded up the following morning.

Fortunately, the break-in attempt did not progress much further.

Authorities believe the suspects were startled after realizing the home was occupied at the time of the incident. Rather than continuing inside, they quickly abandoned their efforts and fled the scene.

Police say the suspects escaped in a white Mercedes sedan that was reportedly traveling with its lights off as it headed eastbound on Montana Avenue toward Bundy Drive.

Limited suspect information has been released. All three individuals were reportedly dressed in black clothing, and police described the driver as heavy-set. Beyond that, investigators have not provided additional identifying details.

It remains unclear whether the suspects were able to take anything from the property before leaving. Authorities have also not said whether the home itself was specifically targeted or selected at random.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

Incidents involving occupied homes often leave residents shaken long after physical damage is repaired. In this case, while the broken window can be replaced, the experience of hearing a forced entry attempt while inside one's own home can leave a lasting emotional impact.

Police continue investigating the attempted home invasion and are asking anyone with information regarding the suspects or vehicle involved to contact authorities.

As investigations continue, residents in neighborhoods across Los Angeles are reminded to remain alert and report suspicious activity to law enforcement. Even seemingly minor details can become important pieces in helping investigators identify suspects and prevent future incidents.
