A Sherman Oaks family is left shaken after a terrifying attempted home burglary unfolded Saturday afternoon, prompting a mother to confront the suspects as they fled the scene.
The incident occurred while the homeowners were away, leaving their children inside the house under the care of their grandmother. According to the family, the grandmother noticed two masked men wearing gray hoodies outside the home’s back sliding door. Realizing the suspects were attempting to break in, she immediately called her daughter to warn her.
Before approaching the property, the burglars allegedly disabled the home’s surveillance system. The family said their advanced security cameras abruptly went offline, suggesting the suspects may have intentionally targeted the system prior to attempting entry.
Upon receiving the frantic call, the mother rushed back to the home in her Mercedes G-Wagon. Overcome with adrenaline and fear for her children’s safety, she unintentionally crashed into the suspects’ white Honda as they attempted to escape.
Surveillance footage from the area shows two men fleeing the vehicle on foot immediately after the collision. Moments later, a third suspect—believed to be the getaway driver—struggled to exit the passenger side of the car, as the driver-side doors appeared jammed from the impact.
Although the suspects ultimately escaped, they left behind critical evidence. Los Angeles Police Department officers recovered radios and walkie-talkies, a crowbar, wallets, and multiple forms of identification from the damaged vehicle. Investigators believe this evidence could help identify and locate those involved.
The family says the incident has had a lasting emotional impact. They now feel unsafe leaving their home, even briefly, and say everyday activities such as errands or holiday gatherings have become a source of anxiety.
Homeowners expressed hope that the recovered identification and personal items will allow police to make significant progress in the case and prevent similar crimes in the neighborhood.
The incident adds to growing concerns among Southern California residents about organized burglary crews targeting occupied homes in broad daylight, often using tactics designed to disable security systems before attempting entry.
