Pair of Overnight Home Invasions Reported Just Miles Apart in Northridge

Police investigate two break-ins in Northridge news headline

Two Northridge neighborhoods were rattled Tuesday night after police responded to separate home invasions occurring within 30 minutes and just three miles of each other.

The first incident happened around 9:50 p.m. in the 9000 block of Vanalden Avenue.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, at least one suspect broke a glass door to gain entry while the family was inside. The intruder or intruders fled upon realizing people were home. The family heard the break-in but did not see the suspect, and it remains unclear if anything was stolen.

Just half an hour later, at approximately 10:20 p.m., officers were called to the 17600 block of Murphy Lane, where a resident and a child were home when a suspect smashed a window. Police say the man, described as about six feet tall and wearing a black mask, gray hoodie, and black sweatpants, fled after seeing the occupants. No injuries were reported, and investigators have not confirmed whether anything was taken.

A neighbor told reporters that the Murphy Lane home had been targeted before and speculated that intruders may be coming from outside the neighborhood.

Authorities have not determined if the two incidents are connected, but they come amid a wave of burglaries across the San Fernando Valley that have prompted increased law enforcement attention.

LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell recently warned that burglars are becoming more sophisticated, sometimes placing hidden cameras near homes to track residents’ schedules. He urged residents to remain alert, share information with neighbors, and work together to watch for suspicious activity.
