In a troubling and unusual crime targeting the entertainment industry, the Los Angeles Police Department is investigating a residential break-in that resulted in the theft of critical, unreleased film footage. The incident occurred in the early morning hours of May 26 at a home in the West Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, which was serving as an active film set.
According to authorities, suspects entered the residence around 2 a.m. and made off with three hard drives containing countless hours of unedited footage for an upcoming—yet unnamed—film project. The LAPD has not released any suspect descriptions or a possible motive. It’s still unclear whether the production was a large studio effort or an independent shoot, but the loss is said to be significant.
The targeted property, located on the 22000 block of Wyandotte Street, was not just a home but also functioning as a makeshift film production site at the time of the crime. This dual use raises questions about the security measures in place, especially when valuable intellectual property is involved.
While no injuries were reported, the theft underscores the vulnerability of both private homes and the sensitive material often stored within them. In this case, it wasn’t jewelry or electronics that the thieves wanted—it was digital content, perhaps worth millions in production costs and potential revenue.
The LAPD is encouraging anyone with information to come forward. Anonymous tips can be submitted at lacrimestoppers.org or by calling 800-222-8477.
