A Valley Glen resident opened fire on an intruder who broke into their apartment early Friday morning, leaving the suspect hospitalized and in police custody.
What Happened
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers received a call about a possible shooting around 10 a.m. on the 12000 block of Oxnard Street, near Coldwater Canyon Avenue and Grant High School.
Authorities said the suspect used a shopping cart to climb through an apartment window, where he confronted the resident inside. The two became involved in a struggle. Police reported that the homeowner warned the intruder he was armed, but the suspect continued to force his way into the kitchen. At that point, the resident shot the intruder in the chest.
Despite being injured, the suspect fled the scene and later appeared at a nearby emergency room. He was subsequently transported to Northridge Hospital for treatment and placed under custody.
Community Response
Neighbors expressed support for the resident’s actions, with many saying he did what was necessary to defend himself inside his home.
Police confirmed that the resident is not facing charges at this time.
Broader Context
This marks the second recent incident in the San Fernando Valley involving a homeowner shooting an intruder. In July, a similar case occurred in Encino.
While some community members voiced concern over an apparent rise in break-ins, an LAPD captain emphasized that reported burglaries in the area are actually declining. He added that more suspects are now being prosecuted as cases are increasingly filed with the district attorney’s office.
